It's the Little Details......

Four years ago a great man left this world to wait for us in Heaven. When we get there, he will have undoubtedly helped cook the meal prepared before us.

My father in law died five years ago today. We had found out he had cancer that July after they thought he may have a case of pneumonia, it was lung cancer that spread rapidly and he was gone on a rainy miserable fall day. The day he was buried, it was beautiful, sunny and hot – unusual for Michigan November's.

I will never forget the first day I met my unknown-to-me-one-day-would-be-future-father-in-law. He came in to visit my husband and and I hadn't ever met someone before who seemed so gruff, he was skinny as a rail and as strong as an ox, paid attention to the slightest details, and won me completely over on the spot.

My father in law never told us he loved us. My husband will always remember the day his dad told him he loved him. Nope, he didn't say it but he showed it in a million little details.

My father in law cooked for us. On Sunday's he laid before us a feast. There was never anything fancy, but it there isn't one person in our family who would say it was anything BUT the very best, top quality food. It usually involved stuffing. He made the best most moist stuffing. He made col-slaw, salad with the dressing on it because Western dressing is the only dressing worth eating, I suppose. He made ham or chicken. He made fried potatoes; fried zucchini with tomatoes and squash and mushrooms. He made pickles. He made huge mountains of mashed potatoes. When I would walk in the house in the winter, he would have apple sauce simmering on the stove. When he found out I have a fondness for good bread, he would bring home some loaves from the Hungarian woman at the market and set a bunch of fresh honey in front of me too, I don't think honey had been used in their house much before I showed up to the family.

He knew I loved flowers and would save discarded sunflower bundles from the market, bring them to life again miraculously for me and they would last a week in a vase on the table. He knew I loved peonies and would have big bouquets of them picked and wrapped for me when I would come over. He dug me up some peonie plants, I can't get them to bloom for anything. I feel like that would let him down. He was known in this area for his geraniums, he had a knack for growing top quality, heavy duty geraniums in the greenhouse out back of their house. I still have one. I feel like I have done something to keep his memory alive with that potted geranium.
He had a knack for finding beauty in junk. I'm not sure how he found the stuff he did, but our front porch is decorated with the metal wagon wheels he had found somewhere. The rock garden has the plow he found. I have a garden area with a huge picket fence square he found and saved from the burn pile. Junk turned to beauty, and he cared enough to save it for me and deliver it.
He died when I was pregnant for S4, we had told him his name before he was born. But there is hardly a week where he isn't mentioned, as in, “If Dad could see these boys eat.” “If Dad could see these boys play.” “If Dad could hear these boys talk like this.”

We miss him.

To everyone in the family, my father in law meant something different. I can only write to you from my perspective. It was a true honor to be his daughter in law and I am grateful for every year I was able to know him so I can pass a bit of him down to our four boys.

I've really wrestled with how to write this post. There are so many things I want you to know about him. His humor, his laugh, the way he snapped beans with a knife....

But what I miss the most is the way he paid attention to details. Oh, it could drive you insane don't get me wrong, but it was in the details that I felt loved. Sometimes I don't feel like making a batch of cookies for the boys, oreo's will fill them just the same, but it's the smell, the thought, the experience of the cookies that they love. S1 once wrote a note for me, it was a class project. It said “Love is...” and he had filled in “...Moma's chocolate chip cookies.”.

Don't underestimate the little things.

A Surprise from S2

It's been an unusually rough patch with S2. He struggles with reading and while he has finally found some books he truly enjoys reading (the Henry and Mudge series by Cynthia Rylant), he still would rather play hockey in the driveway, slide down the snow banks with his cool sled, watch TV, stare into space....just about anything other than homework. This has lead to some rough nights and mornings filled with tears as he realizes he doesn't have his work done and only himself to blame.

He also is the worlds biggest cheerleader. He will clap and cheer his brothers on with everything. “Great job bringing in the groceries. Way to go.” “Man, you are doing great, Dude, clearing the table.” “That was some great work shoveling the steps.” The problem is, HE is supposed to be doing these things.

I am exasperated with him, I will admit it.

And when I don't think I can take much more he does his new favorite coolest thing ever to do. He flaps his arms and walks/hops through the house making out LOUD chicken sounds. He thinks he makes a great imitation of a chicken.

S1, always supportive, finally told him he didn't need to KEEP showing us he could do chicken sounds, we have it figured out already.

So today when he wanted to quickly pull on his jacket and run out to help his Daddy bring back all the soda cans we have been collecting the past few months, I figured he wanted to have a break from his Moma.

Imagine my surprise when he stumbled into the house, HUGE grin on his face and pushed under my nose a bouquet of flowers. “These are for you, Moma. I bought them all by myself. They were five dollars and Daddy had to give me 35 cents but they are just from me because I knew you liked them from when we went there before.”

My heart stopped a moment.

And then it totally melted.

A Moma's Sink

Here is a photo of my sink. I didn’t show you what was in the sink, that would gross anyone out. It can gross me out! Dirty dishes and dumped out cereal tend to do that to a girl first thing in the morning…or the afternoon…or at night before I go to bed, then it becomes the stuff nightmares are made of!

But I regress!

This is the way my sink looks right now. And I feel loved by it. All these flowers were picked by my boys and presented to me at different times. The Dandelions get refreshed regularly, the tulips were some exotic plant the boys were sure I needed inside and the daffodils, well, they just know I love those.

I used to get angry that they would pick them. The whole “NO! Do not touch Moma’s flowers!”

But then I thought how they picked them just to show me they love me. I watched them one day giggling as they picked a few of my beautiful daffodils I had worked so hard at to surprise me at the door.

They had chosen the best for me.

How can I deny them that?

My Daffodils and Tulips will come up year after year after year. But my boys will not always want to run outside in their bare feet, pick me some Dandelions, bang on the screen door cuz it’s settled on the door frame and it hard to open now, stand there with their hands behind their back and grin at me excitedly. “Guess what we find, Moma….tada!”

Ah, melts your heart, huh?

And I love it, so I just had to share it with ya’ll!

Oh, and the Tecnu in the corner of the sink reminds everyone that I am, in fact, a moma on a farm with all boys and we are ready for poison ivy season. And the candle is my favorite, can’t find it anymore, and I burn it on special occasions just cuz I can, being the only girl in this household!

In Honor Of Spring.........

In honor of spring, our three year old spent a good portion of the morning watching Bob the Builder Christmas. My husband updated his countdown to the first day of winter (just to tease me...I start a countdown for spring as soon as New Years Day arrives!)

Son #3 had to bring a sign of spring into his preschool classroom and so we picked one flower from the one clump of crocuses in front of our house. Squirrels apparently waged war on my crocus bulbs over the winter and there were many casualties, but, this one had just bloomed the day before so #3 and I went out and carefully plucked one bloom. He was so sad because it was closed up so tight - it was 20 degrees out! - but we put it in a little drinking cup with LOTS of sealing plastic wrap and sent him on his way to school with Daddy. When I picked him up from school later that day, he ran over to me and he was so excited he was stuttering over all his words and nearly yelling telling me how, just when the class got to look at all the signs of spring his friends brought in, his little yellow crocuses opened up and bloomed. His teacher nodded and smiled "It was very cool."

I had to thank God for that extra special gift to my little boy that day in preschool.

When we got home I let him keep the flower on the shelf by his bed. He has checked it many times! It's going to make him cry when we have to throw it out, but I have already found another little flower coming up that he can have next. And, it IS the first day of spring, there are a lot more flowers to come!
